  18. <p>     When they married 17 years ago, both were aspiring singers.
  19. Now mezzo-soprano FREDERICA VON STADE is an opera and recording
  20. star, and Peter Elkus, as of last week, is her ex-husband. In
  21. the divorce proceeding, Elkus' lawyer contended that since Elkus
  22. sacrificed his career goals to help his wife as voice coach and
  23. in other ways, he was entitled to a share of Von Stade's
  24. "enhanced" celebrity value. "A God-given talent," countered her
  25. counsel, isn't marital property. The judge, sounding the final
  26. note, rejected Elkus' claim.
